DIY SOS The Big Build – Reveal Day!
So today was DIY SOS The Big Build Reveal Day and despite being struck down with the lurgy, there was no way I was going to miss it!
Dosed up with paracetamol I set off for the Isle of Sheppey to watch the Ratcliffe family get their brand new house from the DIY SOS team.
I arrived just before 9am and Garry and Kyle were just about to be shown around by Nick. While they were inside the house, me and about 300 others waited in a neighbouring field and chatted about the 9 day build. They literally built a house, from the ground up in 9 days!! Amazing.
One of the bricklayers I spoke to mentioned he was putting together a doll’s house for Phoebe at 2am this morning, and I understand the last of the decorators left at 4am. There were some very tired bodies crowded around the tea tent, but everyone said, without a doubt it had been an amazing build.
At about 10:30 Haydn, Bella, Phoebe and Curtis arrived and were shown around. All I could hear was squeals of excitement and laughing from inside the house as they were shown around their new bedrooms and the amazing garden.
So why was I there I hear you ask? Well, back in September I have a shoot with this amazing family and the designer chose to use my images all though the house design.
To say I’m chuffed would be an understatement. I initially just wanted to capture some images for them to have as a memory, but when I heard they were being incorporated I was over the moon.
Once all the family got to see the house, all of the trades came down and stood outside. I was up on a wall to get a good view and there must have been at least 400 people there. Each one had given up their time, skills and materials FOR FREE to help this wonderful family.
The family emerged to huge applause and both Garry and Kyle were visibly moved. They thanked everyone and said how wonderful the house was and how much easier it was going to make it for their family. Haydn was delighted with the kitchen that he could reach and promised to cook everyone pizza at the weekend!
When I spoke to Kyle afterwards he said that words could not describe their appreciation for everyone that worked on the project and that they now had a forever home for their forever family. I’ll admit, I was a bit teary eyed at this stage (and I wasn’t alone).
It was an amazing day. If I could bottle the feeling that was on that site today and sell it I would be a very wealthy person. It was just a wonderful thing to witness and also be part of and I hope the family will have very long and happy lives in their beautiful new home.
I’m off to my bed now to try and shift this yucky cold, but I promise I will share the images from my shoot with the amazing Ratcliffe family over the next few days.
The DIY SOS team are off to Manchester next so if you are near their build I would highly recommend you get involved!
